Suite 64 - Project 10.000 Landscapes

Still working on the 10.000 Landscapes project. A little probing on van Gogh. In the first one I introduced the little fairy Tinkebell to one of his paintings. It is a combination mainly based on colour.

Suite 64 No 1: Tinkebell van Gogh

In the second one I introduced a Gaultier figure. It is a comment on Koons who made some Vuitton bags based on iconic painting.  the Gaultier figure, symbolic for a luxuruous lifestyle contrasts sharply with the life of poverty that van Gogh had to endure.  And they use him! - there is no end to their shamelessness. The contrast can be seen in several ways, the delicate movement of the figure versus the  intensely moving landscape, colour versus black and white and so on.

Suite 63 - Project 10.000 Landscapes

Still working on the 10.000 Landscapes project. In the first one a landscape, an early Renoir. A beautiful picture with nice strokes, speed, direction. I let Little Red Riding Hood come in. Her colours combine nicely.

The second landscape is a Monet, one of his well known hay stacks. A lady with a nice black and white patterned skirt entered.

Suite 62 - The 6th Condition - Project 10.000 Landscapes

Still working on the 10.000 Landscapes project. Instead of colour I focused on black and white combinations. The charm of simplicity and contrast. I combined black and white environments with black and white dressed ladies which gives some solid atmosphere.

It turned out to be a little celebration of womanhood. The 6th condition as it is sometimes called. To the woman, cheers!

Suite 60 - Project 10.000 Landscapes

Still working on the 10.000 Landscapes project. I combined some of my favourite film stills with pictures from an abstract painter Cy Twombly. He makes child like expressions but of you look at them closer you will enter a world of advanced sensitivity. The first one her under is Brigitte Bardot in the amazing Godard movie Le Mepris. In this movie there is an analogy between the subject of the movie which is making a movie about the Odyssee and the developments within the movie itself. Gradually Bardot becomes Penelope. I love the contrast between reality and abstract. Also I like the colour combination of red, green and yellow.

Suite 60 No 1: Twombly, Godard, Mepris, Bardot

In the second image I have taken a still from the famous Hitchcock movie Birds, where Tippie Hedren is driving her car. The Twombly picture forecasting the tension soon to come.

Suite 60 No 2: Twombly, Hitchcock, Birds, Hedren

The third image shows a still of the John Carpenter movie Christine, after a Stephen King story, from inside the famous car, the Plymouth Fury. The actress Alexandra Paul is seen from the back but also in the mirror. For me the Twombly picture through the car window adds up to the fear that defines this scene.

Suite 60 No 3: Twombly, Carpenter, Christine, Paul

The last piucture of this sequence is a still from the famous movie Bullit where Steve McQueen ends up in a famous chase scene.  I think the repetitive, almost thoughtless signature of Twombly fits well with the starting tension of this moment.

Suite 58 - Project 10.000 Landscapes

I have started a project which I call 10.000 Landscapes. It is based on a poem by the French mathematician Raymond Queneau. I collected some dozens of different landscapes and some dozens of figures or characters. Then I started to combine them. Here is a result: James Bond in Dr No, in the racing scene, but now in a beautiful Cezanne painting decor. It always gives me a pleasure to look at it. Cezanne, the father of modernism in a result of modernism, popular culture movies.

Here is another example, Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern in the beautiful Lynch movie Wild at Heart, also in a Cezanne landscape. Combined beauty.

Again an attempt to read landscape "between the lines". The first one was a picture made from the top of an old volcano, the beautiful Ostrzyca or Spitzberg in German. The beautiful view  was rearranged.

The second approach was a view on the same Ostrzyca, but now at sunset. I arranged it as if it were an old unfolded picture, signed with some graphic image.

A new attempt to read a landscape "between the lines". I come across this place a lot. There were shapes and forms and anti- shapes and anti forms. I selected one shape and its anti shape and imagined it to be in the landscape colours. Then this is what you get.

The second one, here below, is from a place which is a little behind of where I usually go. It is a quiet place. One  morning it looked lijke a sort of aquarel. So that is how I tried to depict it.

A form, lines and a glow

Here is another attempt to read landscapes "between the lines". The first one is at a place where I come a lot. One day it was just different then usually.  I took a picture and when I came home and looked at it, it was like there was a huge white cloud in front of the tree. It looks somewhat like a comic text ballon, so you are invited to fill in the blanks.

Suite 55 1 Monumental white form landscape

This one happened one evening when I was looking through my window. Maybe due to the atmospheric conditions all sorts of stripes where formed in the sky.  In the center they seem to form a gigantic letter A or a wigwam. But even stranger is the line just in front - it looks like a line from a tennis playfield.

This third one happened one day when I was in the forest.  There was a rather strange glow hanging around. I have accentuated it to give an idea of how it was.

Here is another attempt to read a landscape "between the lines". It is a field in Tarczyn. I tried to combine organic forms with this regular pattern. It looks as if three black suns are guarding this field. I have always wondered how it would be if there were more suns. Or planets. Like some nights ago in one view I could see the moon, Venus, Mars and Jupiter. That is fascinating. Especially if you realize that there is a space ship at Jupiter right now, called Juno.

Suite 54 1: Landscape with three black suns

In this second work I was wandering through the forest. I made it as if it looks that some energetic light beings are jumping. They are amusing themselves. It is a feeling, the world inhabited by all sorts of beings. These are only short moments, but I enjoy them.

Here is another attempt to read a landscape "between the lines". I come across this place a lot and usually it is just a field. But one day, probably due to a combination of weather conditions and an unusual state of mind, the field started to open itself up. Patterns of light slowly danced over the grass as a fog through which a lantern shone. It didn´t last long. My dog was completely calm. I did not know what to think of it, I just enjoyed the visuals.

Landscape paintings

In order to continue my effort to read landscapes "between the lines", I have tried to follow another approach. I put up an easel as you normally do when you want to make a painting. Instead of putting a canvas on the easel I put up a glass window. Actually it is easier this way to make a painting because you can see the landscape right through the glass. Then I painted the landscape or parts of it on the glass. I performed this painting sessions with my friend Urian Hopman who clearly enjoyed the activity. At the end I took pictures of the glass paintings.

Suite 51 No 1: Landscape painting 1

The first glass painting is taken from Urian's garden to the south west side. It has fresh, energizing colours and a nice mix between fluid expressive gestures and detail.

In this second work we had the occasion to work closely. The scene is almost fluid, the background vibrating, and the colours are energizing.

In the third work when it was getting late, we tried to capture the light and the feelings of the moment.

As a next step in experimentation I took landscape pictures, put them under a glass plate, poured water over them and took pictures of these. The procedure reminded me of the old school dark room work. Later I synchronized the pictures (more or less) as different monochromes, so that together they form a rainbow. They remind me of the early Pink Floyd music.

                                                         Suite 49 Etudes

In order to continue my effort to read landscapes (and its inhabitants, like trees) "between the lines", I have tried to approach them as persons. So what I did here is taking pictures of trees as if they were  persons. I imagined they were posing for me and I tried to reassure them. In this first work I think the cooperation with the tree went very well. It is more like a group picture than a real portrait, maybe that is why.

Suite 49 No 1: Tree Portrait (1)

In this second work I had the occasion to work closely in a real "tree portrait". The scene is personal, the background vibrating, and the 1 to 1 focus is energizing. If trees can "give themselves"  this one really is trying.

Hearts of Silver

Very special Taxidermy

Beautiful & rare!

Here is a special offer with some very rare taxidermy. It's like this, I have met Gunther von Hagens, the famous German anatomist, and I have been able to collect a few rare items from him.

Chicken heart, silver

It handles about a small and very limited number of silverized chicken hearts. They were made from real hearts but do not contain any animal tissue anymore. They are difficult to make and they will not be made anymore. The time and costs involved made this project far too expensive, so it was a one time try-out. Only because Gunther von Hagens made a good deal for me I can offer these hearts for an affordable price.

From the esthetic perspective the hearts are really beautiful. You can see all the little blood vessels and of course also the whole structure of the heart. It is amazing, this little thing keeps a chicken going for all its life. Because the most interesting part of this item is of course that it is made from a real heart. What you see was the real thing.

Gunther von Hagens

In Germany Gunther von Hagens is better known as Dr. Death because of his fascination with dead bodies and his innovative way to preserve them. His exhibitions have been travelling around the world and attracted millions of people (Body Worlds).

The process

About the process one can say the following. The heart is first cleaned with water, under pressure, for a long time, to remove all the blood. After drying, the heart is inject with a very fine raisin that is able to go through the smallest blood vessels. After the raisin has dried the heart is put into a "bacteria soup" where the bacteria eat away the real animal tissue. After cleaning it was sent to a prtofessional company that did the silvering. It is a complicated, time consuming and expensive process. This is the reason that Gunther von Hagens was no longer interested in it. He is doing some really exciting installations right now.

Warning

The items are fragile and unsuitable in being used as a necklace. Maybe they could be used as a broche.

Prices

Prices vary because the sizes of the hearts vary. You ncould think that a chicken heart is just a chicken heart, but such is not the case. Animals and people vary from the inside as much as they do from the outside.

Small       50 euro

Medium   95 euro

Big         145 euro

(prices are excluding shipping costs)

                                                         Suite 48 Etudes

In order to continue my effort to read landscapes "between the lines", I did the following experiments. In the first landscape which is actually the path towards my house, I printed the landscape and then cut it and folded it. It's as if you look closely to the earth's belly.

Suite 48 No 1: Landscape with house

In this second work I had the landscape printed and then I folded it on a roll and took a picture of it. The foreground and the back seem to combine nicely - even colourwise - but they represent completely different parts of the original picture. I think it is a nice way to focus on the monumental contours of the beautiful Ostrzyca mountain.

Creativity, personal development and freedom.

                                                         Suite 47 Etudes

There are two things I would like to say about this series. First of all, playing around with landscapes is fun. The final question is: what would be the best way to depict this or that landscape? From there the problems arise. There are so many ways in which to work and the end result is unknown when you are working, so what ways to pursue? In these etudes I have tried out various ways to experiment with these landscapes. Here you see something like a lamellae approach. It is a sort of collage technique. You cut parts of the landscape and then recombine them.

Secondly, slicing things up  - for me - is a way to "read between the lines". Looking at a landscape is one thing. Understanding it, "grasping it", quite another. Hence my efforts to experiment with these landscapes, they are all simple efforts, try-outs, to get that little extra that places can sometimes reveal.

Suite 47 No 1: the Path

In the one below I have tried the same lamellae approach but more like tin roof sheets. It has a slight voyeurish feeling, as if one is peeping through a window.
